Katherine Cohen [00:00:04] Welcome to I hate talking about myself. On this podcast, your favorite stars from Netflix series and films face their toughest interviewer yet: themselves. We write the questions, and then our guests select them the best way we know how - by pulling them out of a bowl. This week we've got actress Zoey Deutch.

[00:00:22] She'll be starring in the upcoming show  The Politician, and she's got a lot of fun facts about us Homo sapiens. So stay tuned for Zoe's history lessons, but not the boring kind, obvi.

Zoey Deutch [00:00:36] Hi, I'm Zoey Deutch. I'm in the Politician, and I hate talking about myself (sighs).

[00:00:47] (Babbles). OK. Natasha Lyonne asks Dracula or Frankenstein? Please do choose. I will please choose. Uh, okay. I know the answer to this. It's gonna be Frankenstein. I just think he's cute. And then I get to have the bride of the hair. Right? She had the crazy, kooky hair. And I feel like, I don't know - it's a look.

[00:01:11] What piece of art can you not stop thinking about? Book, painting, podcast, song?  Sapiens! The book. Yeah. It's just about you and I - where we came from. How we got to have these bodies and these things that do things that we don't even know. Also, I found out that a female fetus grows all of its eggs at four months. So that means you were in your grandmother's womb for five months. You were in your grandmother's womb, like that- just wrap your brain around that one. Read sapiens. Pretty freaking out there.

[00:01:45] If you got trapped with no reception and only had five songs on your phone, what would you hope they were? Candy Shop - 50 Cent. thank u, next - Ariana Grande. Hallelujah. Uh, and uh..uh, Candy Shop By uh 50 Cent. It's a great song, I know every word.

[00:02:05] If you could have one food for the rest your life, what would it be? Pasta. Easy. What's the most random fact or weirdest piece of history you know? Well I already told you that you were in your grandmother's womb for five months... (laughs) Oh! Also pretty crazy: so when we we used to crawl, you know, when we were all on all fours, like we're talkin long-millions of years ago, when we started to stand up on our hips, had to get narrower. So our hips were too small to actually carry babies to full term. So we're all born early. That's why our heads are all wobbly and annoying. We're supposed to be in the womb for another couple months.

Sound FX [00:02:46] (Baby Wail)

Zoey Deutch [00:02:48] Like think about horses or elephants. They just plop out and they like walk in and they're self-sufficient. You and I sucked when we were born. We couldn't do anything. And that's because we had to stand up straight and instead of just walking on all fours.

[00:03:04] What piece of pop culture shaped you the most? I'm getting flashes of like Britney Spears and then I'm seeing Spice Girls. I'm also seeing a little, like, Orlando Bloom, and then I'm also seeing... it's not a piece but these- these are pieces of me. Pieces of me. That's Av- that's Avril Lavigne, right? Skater boy. That's a huge one. It's like spoken word poetry.

[00:03:31] What's the most adventurous thing you've done? I traveled through East Africa - um, in part with Netflix for Our Planet, which you should watch - in Kenya. And then I went, um, around to Rwanda and Uganda and Tanzania with my sister and I, um, went gorilla trekking. And it was - that was the most adventurous thing I've ever done.

[00:03:52] What do you wear to bed? I wear a really oversized shirt and like, um, pajama pants that have French bulldogs on them.

[00:04:04] I couldn't find one with pitbulls and I have a pitbull, so. Anyway, it's pretty hot.

[00:04:10] What's the first food you hated and why? I really hated tomatoes. And it was -that's weird, because I love tomatoes now. I still hate looking at ketchup. Dried ketchup is one of the- one of the most upsetting things that I can think of. Dried ketchup on a plate is so fucked up. I hate it. I swear that I won't look at it. I'll - I mean, I'll like eat - of course I like ketchup, but I don't want to look at it. So gross.

[00:04:46] What's my biggest fear? Oh, I have a lot, but... Oh! Dying in a parking lot. Every time I go to a mall, every time I go to a mall, I just search and search for street parking. Or like any - everytime I'm in a parking lot, and I get out of my car, I like imagine someone, like, slashing my ankles, or like- or like dying in a parking lot. And then I died in a, like, the Westfield Mall parking lot, and that is a bummer.

[00:05:17] What's the most memorable prank you've pulled off or has been pulled on you? I did a show with Sarah Michelle Geller when I was 16, and she loves pranks. And every time I'd come back from a different scene, she'd put all my stuff in my trailer, in a different trailer. So I kept thinking that my trailer kept moving. And I - and she would record me and, like, just laugh at me. And I'd like open my door and be like: 'I just, I could have SWORN my trailer was right here', and then it'd be like across the parking lot. And it would, it was, all the time. And it was successful.

[00:05:52] Ben Affleck wants to know what's your biggest regret? My biggest regret is, uh, is saying that I hate talking about myself, because guess what? Clearly, it's not true. Look at me right here, just talking about myself. But thanks, Ben. Nice to, nice to work with you here.

Katherine Cohen [00:06:10] Isn't she sweet? Make sure to catch Zoey Deutch and next week's guest Ben Platt on The Politician.
